Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Tune in to Larry King Live tonight to see me!

Here’s what I’ll be talking about (you can share this with your friends, family, blog, etc.):

The economy is struggling, mortgage lenders are going under, the foreclosure rate is going sky high, and no one knows what’s next.

What do you do if you’re about to lose the roof over your head?

OneCoach CEO John Assaraf will be among the guests addressing that question on Larry King Live, tonight, July 30 at 6 p.m. Pacific (9 p.m. Eastern). Tune in to hear John’s perspective on how to keep the right mindset now amidst so much gloom and doom.

You can send questions to John and other guests by e-mail or video at the Larry King Live site here.

I hope you get a chance to tune in!

Steering Through Uncharted Waters

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

Long ago I read about a study on goal setting, which revealed the number one reason most people don’t write down their goals is fear of not achieving them. The best acronym I’ve ever heard for fear is (F)alse (E)motions (A)ppearing (R)eal.

Don’t let fear take you off course before you’ve even left the harbor!

It’s very easy—and normal—for a captain to get scared when entering uncharted waters. But this is your life—your ship—and if you want to get to your destination, you must sail on. When we’re caught in life’s storm, fear sets in if we don’t know how to handle inclement weather. Great captains learn to chart their course and prepare as best as they can for the storms. They learn to use the wind to fill the sails, not destroy them. You can learn to be a great captain of yourself. It will take time and effort, but, honestly, no more time and effort than living a mediocre life. It’s up to you.

For you to make headway in your journey, you must be totally honest about where you are today. It serves no purpose to lie to yourself about where you currently are. You must understand that where you are now is only the result of past thinking and planning (or lack of either or both). That’s why I have you complete the True North exercise in my program, Having It All. The exercise helps you assess your physical, mental, and spiritual health to reach greatness in living the life of your dreams.

You can achieve new results if they are carefully thought through and monitored so your outcome is consistent with your desires and dreams. So what are you waiting for—anchors away!

Acquire a Mentor to Reach Your Dreams

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

A part of the goal-setting process that many people struggle with is creating action plans. One way to conquer this obstacle before it even arises is to get a mentor. I’ve had many–I can’t imagine being as successful as I have been without my mentors guiding me.

Identify Your Role Model

If you’ve always wanted to be a professional juggler, but have no idea of where to start with your action plan, find information about a successful professional juggler or two in your area. They will be your role models. There’s someone who dominates in every field, so you always have access to people who are excelling at something at which you would like to excel. Find out what they do and how they do it, then copy what you need, making it your own by adding your own personal twist or genius to it.

Don’t be afraid to ask–after all, imagine how flattered you would feel if someone asked you to be a mentor (and when you start accomplishing your goals, someone might just do that)!

Asking for a Mentor

Once you’ve identified some role models and selected one whom you would like as a mentor, you ask him or her. It’s that simple. “Would you be willing to mentor me?”

Of course, you should let your mentor know why such a relationship would benefit him or her, as well. Make sure you propose to meet at his or her office, and volunteer your talents in some way, such as aiding with a pet project, so that you are helping in return. If you’ve done enough research on your prospective mentor, you should be able to come up with a creative way to help him or her that also demonstrates your familiarity with their work.

Following is a sample conversation you can alter to suit your own personality.

“I want to accomplish ____________, and I respect the results you’ve produced in your life. Would you be willing to help by meeting with me once a week so I can learn from your achievements? I’d like to make it worth your while by ____________. Does a mentor relationship with me sound like something you’d enjoy?”

Don’t rush this process, and make sure you have a few back-up role models to ask in case your first choice(s) are too busy to help.

Love It or Hate It

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Have you ever noticed how there are about as many reactions to an experience on a roller coaster as there are people? One loves it and another is petrified. One is yelling “Woohoo!” and the other is screaming “Oh, no!” One could end up with a belief that roller coasters are scary, while the other person could end up with a belief that roller coasters are exhilarating. Or maybe they brought those beliefs to the ride in the first place.

Different people form opposite beliefs about the same experience all the time. Which beliefs are true? Neither. Or both. The real question to ask yourself is, “Which beliefs will get me where I want to go in life?” Luckily for you, you get to choose for yourself.

When my son Keenan was seven, we were invited to go paragliding in San Diego. I called his mom and left her a message inviting her to join us at the glider port, when we would jump off a cliff harnessed to an instructor.

Can you tell that I’m a more adventurous parent?

His mom came to watch and almost fainted as our son ran off the cliff harnessed to the instructor, the ocean five hundred feet below. It was the first time paragliding for both my son and me, so I didn’t know what to expect and was a little scared myself.

Keenan’s initial belief was, “Wow! This will be so much fun!” After the experience, his positive belief and perception about heights and paragliding were forever ingrained in his mind. His mom’s first thought was that this would be dangerous, but her negative belief was so rattled by our experience that since then she has expressed a slight desire to try it herself sometime.

Some of our beliefs are formed instantly, such as when a significant emotional experience occurs, while others are formed over time, after several experiences. What’s important to remember is that beliefs aren’t good or bad; they just are. As you already know, you must understand and evaluate the beliefs you have to determine whether or not they’re serving you and helping you create the life you really want.

Lets continue to create that life of your dreams—by starting with the beliefs that will serve you! You can discover more about how to do this with my Having It All program.

Meditation: Create a Time and Space Just for you

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Do you ever feel the need for peace and serenity? Do you take time out of your busy day to reflect on your life and the way you live it?

By setting aside a few moments each day to explore your unconscious mind, you will improve the quality of your day.

It can sometimes be difficult to find time for meditation. In my own life, I had to make meditation my first priority in the morning in order to work it into my schedule. As soon as I wake up, I pile pillows in back of myself in bed and meditate right there—that way, I always have time for it. I can’t imagine starting a day without it.

Some people are quite creative in working meditation into their lives. Creating a quiet space can sometimes be as much of a hurdle as creating time. You could reserve a corner in a room, and make sure that it remains clean and uncluttered so that it is always ready for you. A closet large enough to sit in could become a peaceful meditation hideaway for you, complete with comfortable pillow and decorations. A secluded corner of a garden would also work. Many of those who meditate like to have their personal sacred objects around them—a beloved picture, a favorite candle, a beautiful rug. No matter what appeals to you, you must decide to make room for meditation, every day.

There are many different methods of meditation. Explore all the possibilities and find one that works for you. Every meditation’s objective is to go into the silence. Multiple resources exist—you could consult magazines, books, web sites, religious organizations, seminars, workshops, and meditation/yoga centers. You could also try instructional videos or CDs, which provide guided meditations. Following is a short list of several methods of meditation: Some may surprise you, but meditation is more a matter of what you bring to the practice—patience and a desire to silence the mind—than of what the practice entails.

  • Focus on the petals of a flower
  • Drink a cup of tea on your patio or in your garden
  • Walk
  • Do yoga
  • Wax your car

A meditation can be anything which takes you into silence, both inner and outer, and clears your mind of all thoughts. Try as many methods as you need until you find one—or more—that work for you, and proceed on your journey to the life of your dreams.

The No Complaining Rule

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

The biggest problems plaguing businesses and life today is negativity! A good friend of mine Jon Gordon, has written a new book called “The No Complaining Rule”. Jon, also known as “America’s #1 Energy coach,” is a brilliant speaker, consultant and an international best selling author. This innovative book shows you how to tackle everyday negativity and to turn something negative into a positive! Here are 5 positive things we can do each day instead of complain, from Jon’s new book:

1. Practice Gratitude. Research shows that when we count three blessings a day, we get a measurable boost in happiness that uplifts and energizes us. It’s also physiologically impossible to be stressed and thankful at the same time. Two thoughts cannot occupy our mind at the same time. If you are focusing on gratitude, you can’t be negative. You can also energize and engage your coworkers by letting them know you are grateful for them and their work.

2. Praise Others. Instead of complaining about what others are doing wrong, start focusing on what they are doing right. Praise them and watch as they create more success as a result. Of course, point out their mistakes so they can learn and grow, but make sure you give three times as much praise as criticism.

3. Focus on Success. Start a success journal. Each night before you go to bed, write down the one great thing about your day. The one great conversation, accomplishment, or win that you are most proud of. Focus on your success, and you’ll look forward to creating more success tomorrow.

4. Let Go. Focus on the things that you have the power to change, and let go of the things that are beyond your control. You’ll be amazed that when you stop trying to control everything, it all somehow works out.

5. Pray and Meditate. Scientific research shows that these daily practices reduce stress; boost positive energy; and promote health, vitality, and longevity. When you are faced with the urge to complain or you are feeling stressed to the max, stop, be still, plug-in to the ultimate power, and recharge.

Just imagine…

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

Just imagine… if you could have it all, what would you do and be in your life?

What would you buy, and what would you give?
Whose counsel would you seek?
Where would you go, and what feats would you dare to accomplish?

Just imagine your life, lived without limits.

Create your own vision, one that utilizes your own talents. Every person can create a masterpiece just being themselves. Most people just haven’t tapped into their own greatness. They hate their jobs, don’t get along with their spouse, but stay where they are. What if it didn’t have to be that way?

Would you like to wake up in the morning and feel like you get to, instead of have to, go to work? What if you could have a great relationship? Would you like to have it all—money, health, spiritual connection, a job you love, and great relationships with everyone around you? And balance between each of those areas so you can really enjoy your life? Of course you would.

So are you ready to create a vision of possibility for your own life? Then let’s get to it!

You cannot focus on problems or challenges in your life. Instead, describe your life as if you were waving a magic wand and it would instantly be the way you wanted it. The more specific you are the better.

When you set the perfect life vision, everything must be clear and precise, exactly articulated—even the look and feel. The universe operates by exact and precise laws, as you now know, so there’s no room for ambiguity. Put your answers in the present tense, avoid any words of negativity, and concern yourself only with what you want, not how to get it. Refer back to visions as much as you need.

Don’t shortchange yourself by writing only what you think you can become or have—the universe is infinite in supply, so stretch yourself and go for your heart’s desire.
