How do you talk to yourself?

I have been doing quite a bit of research on the power of our “self-talk” and the amount of negative stuff that goes on in one’s mind is staggering.

It actually isn’t surprising when over 90 percent of what is on television and all around us points to negative news or lack.

We’re actually trained to look for what’s bad or what can hurt us before we are ever trained on seeing what’s good or possible.

We are wired to “see” negative all around us and it’s time to stop. The results are devastating and ruining many people’s lives.

I find people will fall into one of four categories:

  • Negative Self-Talk
  • Neutral Self-Talk
  • Positive Self-Talk
  • Enlightened Self-Talk

To understand their true power, look at the language that goes with each category.

Negative Self-Talk

I am not good enough
I am not smart enough
I am not young or old enough
I am not the right color
I am not this or that; you can fill in your own blanks here
I can’t do this or that because…

And then we make up a story to justify the reason. For the most part these are lies!

The Result: A life of lack and limitation backed by doubts, fears and pain. Negative self-image.

Neutral Self-Talk

I should get busier
I should get a better job
I should find a better partner
I should lose weight
I should stop procrastinating
I should…

These people are living on the negative side of comfort and will remain that way until the pain of mediocrity gets to them.

The Result: A very average life that feels it is being wasted. Possibly comfortable, but not totally engaged and pretty average. Average self-image.

Positive Self-Talk

I can or will do that
I am smart enough
I am good enough
I can or will learn that
I can and will change
I can and will overcome this
I can and will adapt to…
I can and I will find out how to…

The Result: A life that feels worthwhile and capable. Usually high self-worth and positively comfortable. Life is very enjoyable here.

Let me suggest that there is yet another breed of Self-Talk is emerging and it’s called:

Enlightened Self-Talk

GOD loves everyone, including me
GOD is in everyone, including me
Love is for everyone, including me
Peace is for everyone, including me
Happiness is for everyone, including me
Abundance is for everyone, including me
Health is for everyone, including me
Joy is for everyone, including me
Fun is for everyone, including me
Smiles are in everyone, including me
Faith is in everyone, ESPECIALLY ME

The Result: An entire society of individuals that respect themselves and each other which leads to highly productive people living their life the way our creator intended them to live-with total abundance and joy.

Please choose to live in an enlightened world with our fellow citizens and me.

Best,

John

Thanks John for the reminder, I am good at positive self talk and do not think about what you call enlightened self talk in my day to day talk. Instead I tend to use that only in affirmations or specific cases. What a good reminder to incorporate it MORE!

I’m so glad you brought up the neutral self-talk, because so many times it gets overlooked! I know I personally have struggled with the ’shoulds’ without ever realizing how detrimental they are.

I love the enlightened self-talk! So inclusive and beautiful!

Amazing! I spent today wondering how to motivate myself to go from what I now know to be neutral self-talk to spiritual self-talk. As I repeat these words for 21 days, I will have a new habit-a new way of thinking. What a great power surge. Thank you.

I love the ‘enlightened self talk’. The thing that helps me too is remembering to be grateful for my life and what I have.

Thank you for the wake up of attitude. Even tho I am a devote believer in good self talk, using it to its fullest degree is the best way to go.

John, I’ve been in positive self talk for years now, but you’ve just inspired me to begin enlightened self talk. I totally understand the concept of why, has just never considered it.

    thank you for the refresher

My biggest regret in life is that I didn’t find out about enlightenment and the laws of attraction sooner. Those of us new to the reality you put before us can not get enough, fast enough or understanding enough of the enlightened way. Thank God we have awakened to this new way of living and life, and thank God for your teachings.

I always try to think positive although sometimes everyday situations become overwelming, and I find myself having doubts which cause the goals I have set for myself to become void. I’ll consciously use the “enlightening self talk” each morning and every chance I get throught the day. I have accomplished many things in the last year with positive thinking that I didn’t think I would be able to accomplish. I’ll use the enlightened self talk to help me get to my long term goals successfully.
Thank you for your guidance and God Bless

Thank you John, I have always thought there is only the -ve and +ve self talk. I am a +ve self talker but now I see why sometimes things work different from my intentions. This is when I gravitate to the neutral self talk. NOW I KNOW

It is both insighful and useful that you have four catagories of self talk, with great examples of each. Living concept of enlightened self talk is my next step.

    Yes, but how?

How does one go from negative to positive (let alone enlightened) self-talk?

  26. Jennifer

Thanks John. Becoming and staying conscious is such a concsious effort! Definately worth the effort when you realise the power of thought. Carolann is right…..What an awesome difference it would make to the world if this were taught to children!
    Be well.

Thank you John. I’ve started from negative self-talk during childhood and youger years, to neutral then to positive self talk. Its only now that you’ve shown me that there is still a more powerful- Enlightened selftalk. But I also realized that our efforts to be more positive and enlighted in our selftalk is being dragged by the effect of past habits and the environment around us.
