Your Powerful Brain

You can never solve a problem on the level on which it was created.
— Albert Einstein

Your brain—that three-pound hunk of matter located between your ears—is the most sophisticated, complex, and miraculous piece of equipment ever known to humankind. It controls everything you see, say, feel, and do. With such a powerful tool at your disposal, isn’t it your responsibility to understand how it works and how to make it work optimally?

Let’s start with some fundamentals.

…To finish reading, download the new chapter, Your Powerful Brain with my compliments, from my upcoming book- Having It All: Achieving Your Life’s Goals and Dreamslaunching November 13th worldwide!

    John,
I have the book and am enjoying it… I do have a question though, if a person is making a career change how does one balance his/her time? You already have the normal 9-5 and now you want to switch careers, not to mention family, not to mention making time to meditate and visualize, etc… How would suggest a person break down their day?

    Thanks in advance.

Larry King and the San Diego Wildfires

Hi Friends,

I was on a flight back from a speaking engagement in Edmonton when I got the call from Larry King’s office saying he wanted me back on the show to help people deal with the mental anguish of the trauma you go through when a life-altering event occurs. Even though I was asked to be on the show last minute, it turned out great. This was the third time in less than a year I have been on the show. (You can see a transcript of the call here.)

The interesting fact is that everyone has a different response when they are subjected to these types of life-altering events. Some people rise to the occasion and become stronger immediately. Others are in absolute shambles and may go into depression. What is the difference then between the two?

The main difference is how we have been conditioned to react to life’s ups and downs and the meaning that we give the event or circumstance.

While we were on the show Larry had one guest who was devastated at losing her home while another was grateful for having her life. She had also lost her brother in 9/11 and in contrast, losing her home now was insignificant. I had to ask myself how I would have felt had I lost my home. After careful reflection my thought was that I would be ok with it. I have learned not to get attached to my materialistic possessions and live my life in constant gratitude of the important things like my health, family and God. My wife on the other hand did not share my feelings, she was very distraught at the possibility of losing our home.

Can it be as simple as what we focus on is what we feel? The answer is yes, however, when we are dealing with loss, tragedy and pain, it’s easier said than done.

Our brains go into an automatic mode of protecting us and release neuro chemicals that enter our bloodstream and cause us to feel the effects of those chemicals.

As everyone has different reactions to trauma, the most important part for us to realize is that love, compassion and empathy is the best solution and to allow anyone who is experiencing their feeling to do so with absolute freedom and without judgment.

Time does heal and the right environment of friends, family and a great community helps.

I take my hat off and give thanks to the firefighters and thousands of other people who have helped all of us here in San Diego.

God Bless,

John

P.S. Here is a link to some of the images from the fires.

all the storys are very uplifting, comforting and enlightening… I have many friends in the affected area as I work in the film industry .. If you think about it,haven’t we all been affected by this … In my community of friends and co-worker we have all become affected, by those effected, and all are working to help those directly …It is interesting how it can make or break you… But… Aren’t we really all connected in this great world, really what affects one can affect another for good or not ….

Gratitude is really one of the key factors for survival both mentally and physically … I have many story’s to tell, but will save them for my book …

I’m grateful for my understand of Gods plan, my family, my neighbors, my Great Country, my health and this site, where I come and partake of uplifting hopeful writings …

What a wonderful observation, John. Wish a lot of people would take on that attitude…it’s hard sometimes…the California fire did not affect me personally, but I used to live there many years ago and to see it all up in smoke, it really saddens me. I plan on making a trip there in the spring to view the devastation…not sure how I’m going to feel about that.

  11. “What we focus on IS what we feel”

I have recently learned this and it is so true.
I have had a hard time, with “Post Traumatic Stress Disorder” for most of my life.

My recent learning from some great therapy, in regards to my thoughts (which were horrific thoughts, memories and flashbacks)
I felt as though with every flashback of being sexually and physically abused as a child, I (it) “felt” as tho it was happening in the moment.

I became increasingly depressed, as when these thoughts came up, and I focused on them, not because I wanted to focus on them…it was because in my mind and body they WERE happening in the “NOW”… also as you say, we all react diiferenly to trauma…my reaction was to allow these memories to stay in my mind, and to look at them, as well as allowing myself to get into the “feeling” place of it (them) meaning the thoughts were actually happening in the moment.

If only I knew then what I know now, about out thoughts, and how to change them, by thought shifting, or becoming more aware of our present surroundings, or focusing on how strong I was to survive such a horrific atrocity…

I would have been less likely to fall into a major depressive episode.

“so what you say, what we focus on we bring about” couldnt be more true!

I “brought about depression” I brought about more flashbacks by focusing on a flashback, and my reaction to the thought and trauma at times was of “disbelief” of how could that have happened to an innocent little girl?

    So that became my “focus”
I thought, how could that have happened,???
it brought about more of “what happened”.

This became a vicious cycle of thought and feelings…

it actually brought about the thoughts of “oh my god, what else happened?”

well, my brain answered that question…
and brought about more thoughts, memories, thoughts, and feelings of “what else happened!”

When I learned, from a great therapist who was teaching me thought stopping, thought shifting, and the idea of focussing on the now…and how great my life is now,,,the flashbacks stopped.

The depression lifted, and I gave thanks for my suvival.

I gave thanks to my dissociative disorder coping skills I developed as a child, which allowed me to survive that current trauma,,, and gave thanks to now understanding “how our minds work”

    or can work!

    My mind now “works”

Quite differently, trauma reaction, and my thought of experiencing a trauma such as losing a home, or material things, is much like yours…

I would become in a state of gratitude for having what I “do have” and be grateful for those things, like love, acceptance, and even an opportunity to start fresh!

This may sound even strange to some people…however, because of my past and present experiences with trauma, and how I now think, has changed tremenously about everything!

I focus on the now, which is great, I focus on the present and my children, grandchildren, my health, and even the computer I am using right now to send this message.

I focus on my present, and future…

my past no longer haunts me, and if a flashback does come up (which inevitably it will and does)

I now have the knowledge, the tools, and coping skills, to shift that thought into the present…and focus on the present, not on the past, or that memory.

My “feelings are then more in a present state of gratitude”

Rather than a feeling of past resentment, discust, or “why me” and feeling sorry for myself and my past!

All is well, as I know Have learned the “secrets”

I sure hope all of this made sense to you and your readers,

this is a difficult one to explain, on how I would feel now if a tragedy, or trauma happened to me now,

especially in regards to “material things!”

    with regards, and respect,

    your friend

  13. When disaster strikes it seems people show love toward each other and are more careing. For some it is a wake up call, we need each other. I too had my home and everything in it burn. It is a loss of items that sometimes cannot be replaced but they were only things. People are what make the difference. They came to my rescue. Thanks

If I was one of those people who have fires close to my home like the one in San Diego California, I would have tried to salvage things which could be saved and then accept God’s verdict if it would be burned or not. Money, houses and material things lost can be reacquired again as long as you are alive and healthy enough and I would be very thankful still that I’m still alive and that nobody died or lost his/her limb within my family members because of the wild fires. Who knows in the next house that I will construct, I will become even more happy and lucky on that new home. Looking back thru life with its ups and downs, I could always say that even the bad things that happened before have very beautiful reasons why it happened for as long as you are able to move on. I’m a practitioner of Maharishi’s transcendental meditation and eversince my first practice, I’m not anymore so much attached to my material possessions.

  27. Thank you for the valuable insight and suggestions you all so generously gave on the show. I would like to add some thoughts. I wrote the following as a result of a conversation with my dental hygienist, here in Florida, after Sept. 11. It applies to any disaster.
I noticed that she was depressed. So I asked her about it. She said she was depressed about the September 11 disaster, and that her kids complain about her mood. I asked her if she had a personal loss, or if she personally knew of someone who did. She said no. So I said to her that I imagine that she has personal challenges in her life, and of course she said she did. I then said that those are hers to carry not the burdens of others. She understood, and felt very relieved and thankful. She later told me that it helped her personally and with her relationship with her children

To my fellow freedom loving citizens of the world,

I feel that coming from Israel, my background in stress management, my metaphysical explorations and life experiences, all together, help me with life and living. I wish to share with you some of my thoughts.

I believe that we must be cautious, vigilant and follow safety procedures. Caution is appropriate action, while worry is inappropriate. Worry affects the worrier negatively, it is paralyzing and it tends to spread, it does not protect people. Instead let us be vigilant and live each day to the fullest, accomplish what we need to and be loving and caring to one another.

Each of us has our personal burdens to carry in life, deal with and go beyond. Let us not carry those that life has not given us personally.
So when we are not too burdened by our personal challenges, let us live creatively, lovingly and joyfully. I believe it is the job of us who have not been personally affected by the incidents, to spread joy and cheer. By doing that, we help each other; we help our youth, our children and ourselves. And in doing so we create an atmosphere of hope and joy for those who are now grieving so when they are ready to lift themselves up from their pain they will have a positive atmosphere to enter into which will be of help to them. And this too will be a help to us in dealing with whatever crisis we need to deal with.

I know that if I were to be personally affected I would need help, but not suffering myself I believe I have a mission, and that in itself helps me feel useful and part of the greater scheme. Yes, I do watch TV; I feel the need to be informed and to have the information to formulate my personal view on things and to know what precautions to take. Otherwise I continue with my activities, try to help those who express their fears, enjoy nature, family and friends, and give thanks!

When I was about twelve in Israel, I was walking home one day in the dark; we lived in a house with Arabs adjacent to the Jewish neighborhood. I used to play with the Arab neighbors, both Moslems and Christians. My parents wanted me home early, the party was not over, and no one would walk me home so early. So, in spite of being afraid, I walked home by myself. Once when I had just gotten home the first shot was heard in Tiberias, not far from where I lived. I had many occasions in life since then when I did things in spite of being afraid.

There are so many fears to deal with, financial concerns, disabilities, health hazards, mortality…. And so many hazards, like traffic accidents, fires, burglaries, loss of job, loss of friends and relationships and many more. The recent events have focused our attention on our vulnerability, but we have always been vulnerable. We have often used the denial mechanism. Well, a little of that is good. We need to keep behaving prudently and leave the rest. The criterion is, can I do something about it? If not, move on. Easier said than done?… Well, we do it every day, and it is a worthwhile mechanism of self-preservation. And as I mentioned before, in doing so we create a positive atmosphere for others and ourselves.

Let us engage in lots of prayers! Prayers for the universe and all its inhabitants! Abundant Resources for all, Peace, Harmony and Creativity!
Let us do our share, starting with ourselves, healing our pains and anger, and help those near us in any way we can, by volunteering or other ways, and support those who act in our behalf.

May the glow of Love wherever it is present spread like a deliberate, persistent and systematic fire, gradually removing hate replacing it with its Uplifting Glow!

Safety, good health, inner and outer peace, harmony and Joy to you and all those dear to you!
    Love,
    Rachel

    Love,
    Rachel

  29. Dear John,
The common greeting, “Great to see you and glad that you’re well” has taken on such an expression of gratitude this week in the wake of the fires. Seeing you on Larry King was one of those moments. Living in San Pasqual, the Witch Creek fire struck our neighborhood 2:30 a.m.. The wind shifted and within 3 hours was in your neighborhood. We we’re helping haul out treasured belongings for one of our friends in Rancho Santa Fe at 6:00 a.m.

I’ve been thinking of you, your family and home in the same neighborhood all the time. So glad to see your face on TV and know that you were spared.

Thanks for giving people comforting advice to deal with their anxiety,
    Tami

It would be so wonderful if we could be taught at a young age what to really appreciate what is important with positive Family values being emphasized. If we all are taught to honor ourselves and taught what is truly important within us then these outter things and what happens to them would be always put in their proper perspective. Also, Dr. Joseph Murphy had written many books and taught that we can protect our family, homes and more by staying “Prayed Up” – in other words staying in the feelings and consciousness that we are always divinely guided and protected. I have firsthand witness to the miracles of protection and other wonderful events that have happened in my life by living this consciousness.

It is one of the hardest lessons I have had to learn and still learning….I don’t think I am attached to material things however I am attached to a certain feeling and as a woman who definitely “feels” her emotions, I don’t know that I would be devastated however I do know I would have a sense of loss that I needed to grieve but I think that would come after my elevated gratitude of being alive in order to “feel” a loss. There is something to be said about “feeling” it yet not having to “live in it”. I guess that could be like having a sad thought but allowing your thoughts to be elevated upward to happy thoughts. Thanks for sharing. Gave me food for thought today. Libby

The information was empowering, however, I get frustrated with the choppiness of the material presented. Just when valuable information was coming, Larry would not allow John or Depak enough time to expand on their thoughts. Switching between speakers, commercials and victims did not give me enough continuity with the information presented. It would have been an enormous blessing if John and Depak would have been allowed more air time.

From personal experience I can relate to both the trauma of losing everything and the experience of the process after the loss. I lost my house to a fire years ago when my children we young and I was a single parent without insurance to cover our belongings. My gift from that day was coming home to a house with smoke pouring from the windows and thinking my 12 year old daughter was in that house. Going to the door with every intention of going in to find her (there was 3 ft of open space floor level, to hearing shouting from across the street and turning to see my daughter standing with a neighbor. In a flash all that mattered was she was safe and “things” could be replaced.
I have since lost everything 2x a second time to a flood. I just moved to calif. and am grateful to be here and finding new “stuff” is a fun part of the journey.
“Life is what we make it”, is a quote from my daughter who was the one who was not in the house that day.
I a very grateful for this life.

Tivo alert: Tune in or record Larry King Live, tonight at 5 p.m. Pacific

Hi all,

Just a heads up to let you know that I will be on Larry King Live tonight (Friday, October 26, 2007) to talk about how to handle your mental anguish when you are confronted with an unexpected loss.

This is a timely topic in the wake of this week’s firestorm in Southern California, where more than half a million people had to quickly evacuate and live for a few days with the gut-wrenching possibility of losing their homes (myself included) – and more than 1,700 families, at last count, have had to face that awful reality.

Tune in if you can! That’s the Larry King Live show on CNN, at 8 p.m. Eastern, 5 p.m. Pacific

CNN changed up their schedule and I ended up with an Anderson Cooper special on the recording. I’ve searched for the video on CNN’s site but couldn’t find it.

It’d be great if you could get CNN to put it up since those of us who are loyal Larry King watchers missed it because of their schedule change. I’ll contact them directly as well.

Yep, I missed it too. Would really love to see this. We all know that love lives on but the pain seems to live on as well. It is so hard to see the silver lining in this kind of tragedy. All of the cliches and positive words can’t seem to repair a broken heart.

Do you think they will ever rerun it on a Sat. or Sun. night? Can you check with the folks at CNN programming and let us know with a special announcement here online? Thanks!

It’s staggering the number of people who have been displaced by the firestorm in California. This natural disaster has also reminded me just how small the world is. One of the participants in one of my Pilates’ classes shared with me that her family had to be evacuated and one of my former coach tutors sent me an email yesterday to say that he and his family were safe and well. I cannot imagine the anguish that people must be going through right now. However, I have faith that the human spirit will eventually triumph.

My thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

Interview with Steve Pavlina

Hi Friends,

I was recently interviewed by Steve Pavlina and he asked me a bunch of great questions. If you would like to see my answers to his questions and also to look around his blog – which is excellent – you can go to it here.

Here are the questions from the interview:

  1. What have been the major contributing factors to your success as an entrepreneur?
  2. What are some of the biggest mistakes you’ve made in business, and what did you learn from them?
  3. What personal or professional accomplishment(s) have you found most rewarding and fulfilling, and why?
  4. In The Secret you told the story of how you manifested your house. What’s your current understanding of the process by which you accomplished this?
  5. What is your understanding of the relationship between wealth and spirituality?
  6. How has the popularity of The Secret affected you, both personally and professionally?
  7. Do you have a purpose or mission? If so, what is it, and how did you discover it?
  8. What are your most important guiding values, and what do they mean to you?
  9. What do you love most about life? What inspires you?
  10. What advice would you offer someone who feels emotionally and financially trapped in an unfulfilling job?

Enjoy!

I really enjoyed reading the interview and appreciated your candour. I particularly enjoyed reading about your identity, purpose and core beliefs. Also ironically, I just finished writing an article today about vision boards and the power of visualisation where I made reference to how you manifested your dream home and didn’t realise it. Coincidence? At the moment I seem to be attracting a lot of very accomplished and very special people into my life. It’s very exciting. I know what my goals are but I can’t wait to see where this will lead to for I can’t help but think that something bigger than I have planned is over the horizon.

Dancing with the Stars – Jane Seymour

Hey friends,

I thought you might enjoy these photos of me and my wife Maria with friends Jane Seymour and her dancing partner Tony Dovolani. We were at a dear friend’s house (Mario Simic) the other night to enjoy an art exhibition and Jane was the featured artist.

John, Maria & Jane     John & Tony Dovolani

Check out Mario’s site for world class art at great prices at http://www.simic.com.

It was so much fun! Jane is such a sweet woman and what she has accomplished is truly remarkable.

We ended up buying the art piece in the photo along with another great piece by Yugoslavian artist Milanov.

Anyway, just wanted to share with you some fun things in my life and wishing you a “masterpiece” for yours and your loved ones.

John

The One Major Key for Achieving Outstanding Results

Sometimes it seems as if people were born without instruction manuals and yet are forever trying to figure out how all the pieces fit together on the fly. But the truth is, 20 years of research in the field of human potential and performance shows the amazing abilities that every person has and how each person taps into them. In fact, one of the greatest discoveries ever is how the subconscious mind gets programmed and how it controls almost everything people do. This is all part of my program, Having It All: Achieving Your Life’s Goals and Dreams.

But I’d first like to explain one simple idea that I know will open your mind to actually understanding your true potential. First and foremost, understand that the intelligence that created you made no errors in his creation. We are pure intelligent energy with amazing capabilities.

For the purpose of this report, I am going to focus on one of the most important pieces of information you will ever read.

Your subconscious mind has three very distinct responsibilities, and the one we will deal with today is called your ‘psycho-cybernetic mechanism.’ This single piece of information can, and will drastically change your life if you totally understand it and use it! Read the entire explanation, and then get ready to see amazing results in your life.

PSYCHO-CYBERNETIC MECHANISM

A cybernetic mechanism is simply how a system operates automatically. One such system is our brain and nervous system. This is called a psycho-cybernetic mechanism. Another cybernetic system can be mechanical, such as how your home-heating and air-conditioning system works.

As an example of how a ‘cybernetic’ mechanism works, I want you to think of the thermostat in your home that you have set at 70 degrees. Now, let’s say that someone opens a window in the house and heat comes in. The control center (the brain) of the thermostat picks up a deviation from the ‘set’ program (being 70 degrees) and automatically sends a message through the electrical system to the furnace that the air conditioning should be turned on. This happens in a nanosecond, and the air conditioning kicks in until the temperature reaches the original set program on the thermostat that you or someone else originally set.

Sounds pretty simple right?

Let’s get to the fun part…

As children, we are programmed and conditioned to have beliefs in each area of our life. All of your beliefs about your potential in each and every area of your life were instilled in you by your parents, teachers, caregivers, through the books you read and the experiences you had.

All of our ‘mental programs’ are housed in our subconscious mind and operate automatically just like the ‘set temperature’ in the furnace story.

Our teachers instilled in us the best information they knew and had at the time. Through repetition and study a ‘mental program’ is created in your subconscious mind. The mental programs that each of us have are not good or bad, they just are (some serve us better than others). Once they are embedded in your subconscious mind, they operate automatically exactly like the set temperature on the thermostat.

WEIGHT-LOSS EXAMPLE

So, here’s an example of how this marvelous system works in us:

Let’s say that your internal mental image or current self image for your body weight is 195 lbs. This weight is maintained automatically by your subconscious mind. You will eat and do everything that is in exact accordance with that mental image and set program.

Now, one day you consciously decide that you want to lose weight and you go on a diet. You use your will power to eat differently and you may even start to exercise. Sounds good right? It works for a while and then what happens?

The majority of people gain all their weight back within a very short period of time. Some even gain more!

Here’s why…

No different than the thermostat on the wall, your ‘brain’ senses a deviation from the existing self-image or set ‘internal program’ for your weight and does everything it can and must do, to keep you at the weight that is programmed in the subconscious mind.

It is just doing its job, and this all happens just as fast as in the example with the furnace. Your nervous system operates at lightning speeds. Unless you change the image on the inside first, the outside will never reflect the new weight for very long.

Your subconscious is your power source. Most people use their conscious mind to try and lose weight and they are for the most part, just wasting their time.

God created a perfect system, but didn’t give our parents or us the instruction manuals to operate them perfectly. And you can be certain that you and I operate perfectly.

IT’S UP TO YOU: TAKE CHARGE

Your body and brain are the most sophisticated pieces of equipment known to man. And it’s your sole responsibility to understand how to use them to maximize their potential. If you don’t because you are lazy or uninterested, you will succumb to settling for much less than you are truly capable of.

It is your job to understand exactly how all of your internal mental and external systems work. You can learn more about how to take charge in my program, Having It All: Achieving Your Life’s Goals and Dreams. Not knowing exactly how you really function at every level limits your potential and your results.

INCOME EXAMPLE

Here’s another example…

Let’s say you want to double your financial intake and you do not re-program your subconscious mind. You may have a great month and make a lot more money than in any other month before. As soon as you start to produce better results than you have in the past, your ‘cybernetic’ mechanism will pick up a deviation from the existing financial ‘self-image’ and you will automatically revert back to behaving in total sync with the current internal image you have in your subconscious mind.

You will start to do everything possible to keep consistent with the old self-image without even being aware of it – except, now you are!

If you want to learn how to reset your ‘internal programs’ to achieve greater results than ever before, pick up my book and go through the step-by-step plan I used to reset my own mental programs to achieve amazing results in my own life.

Here’s some more food for thought…

Think of some of the extreme groups in our society that believe in order for them to have peace or go to heaven, everyone else except those who believe their ways, must die. Their beliefs are not ‘wrong,’ their beliefs are just what they have been taught and programmed to believe. Their beliefs are survival mechanisms that have been instilled in them at a subconscious level for centuries.

If you believed, rightly or not, that your survival was on the line…what would you do? What would you teach your children about that ‘perceived’ threat?

Begin to understand that you have unlimited potential and that your ‘old conditioning’ or set programs automatically control the thoughts, behaviors and actions that are in harmony with that belief.

As soon as an idea presents itself that is foreign to your nervous system you automatically begin to rationalize or tell yourself ‘rational-lies’ on why you can’t make more money, share land with someone, get a promotion or lose the weight you want. This happens so fast it requires no thought on your part.

There is an incredible force and intelligent energy at work that we cannot see; yet it is part of us and is everywhere. All we have to do is to learn about all of our true physical and mental abilities and the question of our potential suddenly takes on a new meaning.

You have probably heard that we as humans only use about seven to 10 percent of our potential.

With that in mind, may I suggest that you stop doubting your potential and limits, and start questioning where the doubts and fears that are holding you back came from and then begin to eliminate them!

If you want to learn in detail more about why you do what you do, or more importantly, why you don’t do the things you know you should do, then grab a copy of my program, Having It All, and take charge today.

You can find info and testimonials here to learn about many who have applied what you’ve just read.

To your having it all!

John

A lot of this is surely down to the laws of attraction, self belief, and changing the very way all is perceived. The only real way to increase our potential is to change the way we think in ALL walks of life. Our subconcious will automatically obey our thoughts. negative or positive. A case of changing our thought patterns for the better. Great read as usual John.

What a difference a century makes!

This will boggle your mind, I know it did mine!

The year is 1907. One hundred years ago.

Here are some of the U.S. statistics for the year 1907:

The average life expectancy in the U.S. was 47 years old.

Five leading causes of death in the U.S. were:
1. Pneumonia and influenza
2. Tuberculosis
3. Diarrhea
4. Heart disease
5. Stroke

Only 14 percent of the homes in the U.S. had a bathtub.

Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

The average wage in the U.S. was 22 Cents per hour.
The average U.S. worker made between $200 and $400 per year.
A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year.
A dentist made about $2,500 per year.
A veterinarian made about $1,500 per year.
A mechanical engineer made about $5,000 per year.

More than 95 percent of all births in the U.S. took place at home.

Ninety percent of all U.S. doctors had no college education. Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press and the government as “substandard.”

Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over-the-counter at the local corner drugstores. Back then pharmacists said, “Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health.”

Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.

There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE United States!
Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.

A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost eleven dollars.

There were only 8,000 cars in the U.S., and only 144 miles of paved roads.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million people, California was only the 21st most populous state in the Union.

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower.

The American flag had 45 stars. Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii, and Alaska hadn’t been admitted to the Union yet. The population of Las Vegas, Nevada, was only 30!

Sugar cost four cents a pound.
Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.
Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.

Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn’t been invented yet.

There was no Mother’s Day or Father’s Day.

Just try to imagine what it may be like in another 100 years. It boggles the mind!

  1. Karin, thank you for your appreciative words. John, I also need to thank you (truly apologise for not having done it earlier) for such a lovely post which sets our imagination whirring at high speed.
The piece about the new generation (does it matter? It just works and we use it) reminds me of something I had read a long while ago. A son tell his father ” Our generation has all the technology. We have the best audio visual systems, the best multi functional cell phones, fast computers, the internet, sleekest cars, the fastest supersonic jets. Our generation has everything to make life easier with comforts and luxuries. Dad, what has your generation done?”
Dad quipped ” We spent the best years of our lives developing all these comforts and luxuries so your generation could enjoy them. Now the question is – what are you doing for the coming generation?” Well, this is just in a light vein. The Great Puppeteer will surely devise ways to make all coming generations “understand” as he did with ours and countless generations before us. I visualise not just a ray but bright sun beams of Hope for the next hundred years. May we all be there to enjoy a good part of it all.

  2. I whole heartedly agree with this previous post! It was a pleasure to read such a well written, and articualate comment! The awe and spendour of all of that which we currently see, the viewing of it, the feeling of it, and speaking of it, will be magnified and we will once again be in the intense wonder of “what next?”
I have three adult children, and enjoy listening to them as they see the world currently and as they see the world in it’s coming in there minds and eye.
When listening to their thoughts, opinins and ideas, of the present and future (as they also sit and “text” message a friend typing a mile a minute on this miniture cell phone) I find myself, wondering if they know just how great of a time they were born into, and if they have the same wonder as I do as to how these phones work, or how electicity works. I have asked them this question, and their answer is, “does it matter? it just works and we use it!”
Kind of reminds of the part in the movie “the secret” Proctor speaks on electricity, and how no one really knows “how” it works, it just does…
I enjoyed reading your last 2 sentences and hope for the same!

“To my mind the icing, utopian as it appears, would be if humankind is able to rid itself of hate, envy, anger and like negativities and rise towards peace and harmony for all.”
    A beautiful thought of hope.

  4. One point I am convinced about from Karin Hiebert’s post is that the next 20 years will certainly be of awe and splendour. Everything else could be pure conjecture. We are in for some awesome and mind scrambling surprises with advancements in all spheres of life. The last century saw leaps in technology. The coming century (more so the next 20 years) may unveil formidable advances in metaphysics, parapsychology, even spirituality and the cummulative effect may lead to the absolute awe and splendour we speak of. Let’s wait and watch for unfolding marvels with anticipation and bated breath. Hopefully we are about to witness the most phenomenal period of this planet’s history. To my mind the icing, utopian as it appears, would be if humankind is able to rid itself of hate, envy, anger and like negativities and rise towards peace and harmony for all.

  5. I we could NEVER ignore the successes, advancements and incredible progress we have made, and continue to make!
a lot of things are in my opinion still based on the old becoming new, bigger, better more advanced.
it is like the telephone and electicity…we have learned from it, to work with it! to create advances, often our pasts dictates where or how these advances are coming from…
Will we reinvent the wheel…I don’t know, will we advance on the wheel? make it bigger, better, smaller faster? who knows?
we are creating jobs and teaching and training people for jobs which don’t even exist! might not make sense to some…
    regarding John’s post;
I consistently read a variety of magazines from scientic journals on health to what we are learning about the cosmos and all i can say is that the next 20 years will surely be ones of awe and spleandour!
    I, karin, couldn’t agree more!
I too read this type of information as this is all of great interest to me…it does make one think and wonder about what is next to come, and what the next 100 years will look like!
too bad on won’t be here to see it, however, you never know advancement may find a way of keeping me here! lol

  25. As always, John an informative post!

It truly is amazing how things have changed in my own life.

As a child I grew up with a 3 channel black and white t.v. a “wringer” washing machine, a rotary phone, and a large tin tub, where four of us children were bathed in, once a week, every sunday.

We still used detergent of sorts to shampoo our hair, eggs were simply too expensive!
I could go on forever as to the changes in my life alone, and just so you know I AM 49 YEARS YOUNG!

I watched the progression to color television, the change in major appliances, vehicles, “cordless phones” (which baffled me) to cell phones which baffle me even more!
The cell phones were the size of a “real” phone, to now the size of a thimble!
    (still baffles me!)

So many changes, from computers, dial up, people not ever confident to enter a charge card or any info, to doing online banking and heading to the computer with their charge card in hand with complete confidence, ready to shop for everything and everything on line!

Ongoing into WEB2.0, video, audio, e- books , and blogs like this ONE… to communicate education to the world!

And the changes are still coming fast and furious!
I am excited everyday to see what new advances are coming… and still, baffled…lol…

“What is to come?” its anyones guess, however we are preparing for jobs which we do not even know quite what the those jobs will be or what these employees, will be doing…but some training is going on and as I say, “for what?” only god knows/ rather the universe knows, and really the universe does not yet know.

As WE, continue to come up with our thoughts, ideas, and action, to create these changes and advancement!

WE WILL continue to change our world! We are creating these changes.
Research and developement continues on, as we continue to be educated, or follow /elaborate on some of the ideas of THOSE of from our past…

Some things will remain the same, however kept in the “secret” for those that know FACT…

    I am a professional hairstylist.
Most people do not know this fact… there is NO need to ever shampoo our hair, as our hair has a natural way of cleansing itself,
and our natural oils from the scalp to condition and add shine to the hair!

The old school medications, such as those mentioned are still used, however as a last resort when traditional, new scientic meds do not work.
Doctors still turn to medical marijuana, for pain relief, or the relief of nausea, from cancer therapies like chemo etc.
    AS A LAST RESORT….

Our “advances” are good, actually great, although some of OUR old WAYS are still the better choice (and we do know)they work, using “old school” METHODS, in certain situations… we may be better off.

Many OF these worked quite well! (and eggs are actually the best thing to use as a great CONDITIONER!

Some things from THESE previous centuries as you mention above, ARE wonderful advances.

And as a mother and grandmother, everyday is “mother’s day” if your children are raised to love and respect there mothers unconditionaly, as we love and respect our children unconditionally.(yes this is possible!)

Mothers day? A hallmark of commercialism…

Lower speed limits, probably did not kill as many as now, the stats of “vehicle accidents” being one of the top killers,

along with canned beer…well, lets not go there…

of course speed limits would be riduculous at 10 mph, wouldn’t get us anywhere…but the fact still remains that “speed” kills!

What are all of your thoughts on this?

    Readers, John,
leave your comments here, and check back often…this is the number one blog…in my humble opinion!

  27. Oh, I forgot to mention in my earlier blog: In 3007 there will be no American or any other country flag. Just one Planet Earth Flag, maybe 3 dimentional. What an elating thought!

  28. Stretching it to 3007:
Sugar may cost $400 a pound, eggs $80 a dozen, coffee $100 a pound. On the flip side, maybe there will be no cars at all. Spiritual advancement and astral projection may redefine travel. And maybe the population of the moon will be 10 million. Is there really a limit to imagination and visualisation resulting in manifestation,,,

With technology the way it is, I can only imagine what the next 100 years will be like. Twenty-four hours in a day will seem like six hours. 365 days in a year will appear to be four months. Time is flying at such a fast rate along with new discoveries happening every nano second, it’s kind of frigtening to think how our grandchildren are going to handle the stress of it all.
I pray that I will live to be at least 125 years old so that I will havethe opportunity to say, “Back in my day…”

Very interesting. It helps one appreciate even more how fortunate we are to live in the 21st century. Also, a brief response to Patricia – it is perhaps not so much a question of what changed in our awareness but simply that our awareness changed. It grew, expanded as all living things do and will continue to do so. Even in our lifetime we are experiencing phenomenal changes in our lives.

So, if we think and decide to have better things for the next 100 years, we can probably give to our children a better place to live… Let’s do that!!!

The Having It All Carnival is Now Beginning…Step Right Up – Call for submissions

So, John thought it would be fun to start a conversation about what it means to “Have it All” to you. Enter BlogCarnival.com to make it simple and easy to get the conversation going!

The Having It All Carnival is about having more money, more life and more love…what are your thoughts and conversations around that? Is it possible to truly “have it all”?

Here are the 3 questions we’d love you to answer in your Blog Carnival submissions:

If you have a blog, we invite you to step right up and submit your articles, ideas, postings, musings about “having it all” for consideration and inclusion in the first ever Having It All Carnival.Never been to a Blog Carnival? That’s okay – here’s how it works…

It’s designed to start a conversation about a topic of interest to the blogger who starts it – in this case, John and “having it all” – more money, more life, more love in life and business. In order to have the conversation be two-way, and interesting, you invite other bloggers to submit their thoughts, articles, musings, on the topic to you, the blog carnival host.

The host then reviews all of the submissions, selects the ones they feel are most interesting, provocative, etc. and gathers them according to topic and then posts a short summary of them all on their blog, and links out to the person’s blog for the full read. Fun!

Blog Carnivals are designed to travel (that’s why it’s called a carnival ;-) ) to different blogs. John will host the first Having It All Carnival on his blog. Then, we will invite someone else (or someone will volunteer) to host the next edition on THEIR blog.

Got it? Good. No? You can get all the info you need here at the BlogCarnival.com FAQ (opens a new window)

Again, here are the questions we’d love you to answer in your Blog Carnival submissions:

(choose ONE of the areas listed below, you can submit in one area this time, and then another for the next carnival). You’ll also need to have the “permalink” to your “having it all” blog article/posting ready to copy and paste:

Money
Brain
Business/Career
Spirituality
Law of Attraction
Mental Health
Physical Health
Relationships
Contribution

Step Right Up…Submit your blog articles, musings and rants to this edition of the “Having It All Carnival”! Use our carnival submission form. Past posts and future hosts can be found on our blog carnival index page.

Hope to see YOUR blog featured in the Having It All Carnival soon…

Create a Great Day,

Michelle Price

Me too I agree with the Tammy. I like to see the list of males under 30, self-made 2007. How come they don’t seem to get much coverage? I think it’s admirable to be an entrepreneur at such a young age. Not many young entrepreneur role models like Trump to follow.

  5. I don’t have to read the article, all I have to do is look at the faces – all white males – to know how far we haven’t come in this country in an equitable distribution of wealth…I have a hard time believing this is because only white males are capable of the focus necessary to “get to the top.”

very interesting a bit dissapointing that there were no women.
The most interesting part for me how much of their success they attributed to luck. Also their most valuable lesson.
